Your collage compositions

In this course, equivalent to a 4-day workshop, we take a deep exploration into collage using a range of papers and approaches. We gather and create collage papers using a variety of media. We use these to develop exciting collage works on paper and in sketchbooks. A mix of collage composition studies, collage creations in a concertina sketchbook and mixed media layered collage studies on paper are produced.

Join me on an exciting exploration of all aspects of collage creation

  • Do you love pattern and texture and seek different ways of incorporating it into your artwork?

  • Do you enjoy the impact of collage in artwork and want to explore how you could bring it into your own work to add variety and interest?

  • Would you like to develop more abstract work but struggle to become less representational?

  • Do you love to incorporate collage in your work but struggle to get the impact you want and the most out of your paper combinations?

I am fascinated by my surroundings and in creating artwork that reflects my experience of the landscape and of places. I am continually exploring the visual language of my subject: Their shapes, lines, patterns and textures, through a range of drawing, painting and mark making approachesCollage is an important element of my work, whether it be studies on paper and in sketchbooks or within my mixed media paintings.   I explore the pattern and texture of my subjects using collage and I also use collage to help create dynamic and less representational compositions.   I am excited to share my collage experiences and study approaches with you on this course.

The course is structured to follow the pace of a 4-day workshop.  We will be exploring a range of approaches using collage.   We will first discuss gather and create different types of collage papers using a range of mixed media mark making approaches. We will explore the impact of different papers as part of image creation, creating collage works on paper in black and white and in colour.  I will demonstrate throughout using a combination of themes as well as my own live project (Ramshackles, dilapidated places include fisherman’s huts and farm buildings).  We will create collage concertina sketchbooks to help us tell the story of our chosen subject matter.  Finally we will create a series of experimental studies on paper to help us explore aspects of our subject.

You can follow along using my examples as a basis for your studies but you will probably wish to identify your own subject.  It could be a view from your window, your garden, other landscape or non-landscape subject. You may prefer to be inspired from photographs or your own drawings and studies.

I have included a review section at the end of the course to show you how I develop and progress my own work.  This can be used as a basis for you to consider ways in which to continue the work you have created on the course.

These approaches will help you to develop your own rewarding collage practice as you will be able to tailor the content and make it specific to what suits you, your subject matter and the way you work.
